Dishwasher and draining:
The main problems somebody can be facing with a dishwasher are drainage problems. The issue can be in a few different areas. Before you will take any further actions, you need to figure out where the problem is. It is possible to be:
- On the drain line.
- On draining connection.
- Where the hose is located.
- On the air gap.
- In the motor.
- On the draining valve.
Dishwasher drain line:
The dishwasher’s drain line starts inside the dishwasher. It is covered with a filter that needs to be cleaned often. If you do not clean it, at some point will get clogged. The water will not be able to get drained and it will be harder to clean it after.
Dishwasher drainage connection:
The dishwasher’s drainage system is going down the sewers. Usually, it is connected with the hose to the sink. In this way, you do not have to worry about separate connections for the dishwasher’s drainage system.
Dishwasher drainage hose installation:
Another location of a clogging problem can be the dishwasher’s hose. At some point, it can be leaking or get clogged. You may need to remove it in order to clean it through and eventually, you may need to replace it. The hose is necessary for the draining system of the dishwasher, so it needs to be installed properly.
Dishwasher draining air gap:
Another and very important part of the dishwasher is the air gap. Because when the dishwasher is working is sealed, you need an air supply for the water to drain. Otherwise, it will be drained much harder and with bubbles coming from the hole. So, by the time the draining will be completed, water will be still left inside undrained.
Dishwasher draining motor:
Having a problem with the dishwasher’s motor, that would mean that the whole dishwasher has been broke down. Well, in this case, you will be not facing just problems with the drainage system. You will also have a problem with washing everything and rinsing them. The dishwasher will be filled with water and it will be not working as should be.
Dishwasher draining valve:
The draining valve has one of the most important roles in the draining process. It is controlling the water inside the dishwasher and draining the water when is needed. However, it may be out of order. It will get stuck and will not allow water to leave the dishwasher. Problem with the draining valve is very common and is nothing that you should worry about. It can be easily replaced.
Can a dishwasher get clogged?
Apart from the dishwasher technical draining issues, a lot of people are wondering if the dishwasher may get clogged at some point. Just like every machine that uses water, also the dishwasher can get clogged. The most common ways for the dishwasher to get clogged are:
- By food.
- By soap.
- By salt from the water.
Dishwasher clogged with food:
Before you put your dirty pots in the dishwasher, you should rinse them first. However, always something stays in them. The dishwasher has a special filter inside that collects most of the leftovers in order to avoid clogs. However, it may be filled and make a clogging problem.
Dishwasher clogged with soap:
Every dishwasher is using a special soap dispenser to wash the pots. The grease with the soap and the leftovers may be building slowly on the filter and will cause your dishwasher to get clogged. This is something you can avoid by giving an extra rinsing on the dishwasher. The less soap stays, the less will get solidified and will cause you a problem.
Dishwasher salt clogged:
The high temperatures are causing the water to be boiling. The water at the end of the washing will stay on the sides of the dishwasher. It will be evaporated and the salt will stay. It will slowly build up more and more. If this will be ignored it can cause a permanent problem to your dishwasher.
Cleaning a clogged dishwasher:
Cleaning a clogged dishwasher may be complicated. What you need to do is have a look first where the clog is located. By cleaning the clogged part you may have fixed the clogging issue you were having. For example, if the filter is clogged and you clean it, you should be having no more problem with the clogged filter.
Draining a dishwasher manually:
When you are facing a draining problem where the water doesn’t drain at all from the dishwasher, you need to drain it manually. In this way, you will have better access to the problem that you may be facing. In order to drain it manually, you can use towels in order to absorb all the water from the dishwasher into a bowl. It is the easiest way to do remove the water, but it will take some time.
Clogged dishwasher fix:
Fixing a clogged dishwasher can take from 5 minutes of your time to a whole dishwasher replacement. There are common clogs that people are facing on an everyday basis with their dishwashers. So, before you end up in fast conclusions and hire a professional you may wanna have a look in it by yourself.
Clogged dishwasher remedy:
In order to avoid possible clogs in your dishwasher, maintaining it is very important. You do not need very strong chemicals in order to do that. You may have already those in your house and you do not know how important and helpful they can be. The main ones are:
Clogged dishwasher bleach:
Bleach is one of the strongest chemicals used on daily basis in your house. However, it has a very good use for your dishwasher which you probably don’t know. It is a very strong degreaser and is killing 100% of the bacteria. What you need to do once in a while, is pouring a small amount in the dishwasher. You can’t use too much because it can be dangerous for your health. A teaspoon on an everyday basis should be enough.
Dishwasher clogged vinegar:
Using vinegar in the dishwasher is very good against the salt that has been piled up inside. What you need to do if you notice that a large amount of salt is being made, is pouring a pint of vinegar inside of it. Let the dishwasher make a washing while is empty. The hot water, combined with vinegar will remove the salt from the dishwasher. That is why is better for the dishwasher to be empty at this time.
Clogged dishwasher and garbage disposal:
Have you thought how can your garbage disposal and your dishwasher get clogged at the same time? When you do have a garbage disposal, the dishwasher is usually connected to it. With this happening, the clog in your garbage disposal is affecting the draining of the dishwasher. What you need to do is to press the red button from underneath of the garbage disposal and place an Allen wrench in the central hole. By moving it forwards and backwards, the garbage disposal should get unclogged.
Clogged dishwasher and sink:
There is another case where the dishwasher is connected to the drains of the sink. When you have both the sink in the kitchen and the dishwasher clogged, it means that the clogged area is below the connection of those two. You need to remove the pipe from underneath the connection and clean them properly. If everything looks fine, then you may need to use a snake to reach deeper inside the pipes.
Clogged dishwasher hose:
What can you do when the dishwasher’s hose is clogged? First of all, you need to disconnect it from one side. The best would be to disconnect it from the dishwasher’s side, which is more often getting clogged. Once removed you can pump inside of it by blowing air in order to unclog it. When you will put the hose back on you need to make sure that you have connected it properly in order to avoid possible leaks.
Clogged dishwasher overflow:
When a clogged dishwasher is not draining is overflowing with water. One of the main reasons for overflowing problems is that the air gap is clogged. With the dishwasher’s air gap clogged, the water will be not able to drain. What you need to remove the lid of the air gap and take off whatever is on the top blocking the air.
Clogged dishwasher rinse-aid dispenser:
So you are using the dishwasher and the pots are coming out dirty. That is a sign that the rinse-aid dispenser is clogged and needs cleaning or replacing. In order to remove the dispenser, you need to disconnect the outer part of the dishwasher’s door from the inner. Once disconnected, you need to remove the screws that the dispenser is holding onto them. Clean the dispenser and put it back. Screw the screws you removed back on and make a test. If the situation hasn’t changed, you need to replace the dispenser.
Dishwasher spray arm clogged:
Another reason why your pots may be still dirty is that the spray arm is clogged. The water used for washing the pots will be reduced, so you will not get a good result. What you need to do is release the holes. You can use a small needle to free the holes from whatever is clogging them.
Dishwasher blades clogged:
Spray arms are also known as blades. It is possible at some point that the spray arms will be clogged at their base. This will have a result for them not to be able to spin. What you need to do, is remove the blade and have a look in its base. There may be some unwanted stuff that has caused it to get stuck.

Dishwasher bottom clogged:
How can the dishwasher be clogged in the bottom? This is where the dishwasher’s filter is. It is collecting all the pieces of food that were left and prevent them from going inside the pipes. This needs to be cleaned often. You will see right in the bottom of the dishwasher a circle extending part. Remove it and clean it properly. When it gets filled with stuff it will cause you a clogging.
Dishwasher clogged air gap:
Another reason why the dishwasher is not draining is that the air gap is clogged. It can be located on the top of the sink. What you need to do in order to unclog it, you need to remove the cover. Usually, most of the stuff causing the problem are collected on the top. Remove the dirty stuff carefully so they will not be dropped back inside. This will free the air gap, which is necessary for the dishwasher’s draining.
Dishwasher draining to sink:
Is the dirty water from your dishwasher backing up in the sink? This is because the drain pipes are clogged. Even if the draining flow is slower than usual, the water from the dishwasher may be backing up in the sink. You need to have a look in the pipes underneath the area where the hose is connected with the drain of the sink.

So, right after the filter in the bottom of the dishwasher is a plastic pipe called one-way valve. This is connected to the draining hose and stop the water from draining or backing up. Something may be inside of it holding the spring open. You can easily open it by using a screwdriver. Remove whatever is inside of it holding the spring open and place it back as it was.
Dishwasher draining loud:
What can you do to stop your dishwasher from draining loud? Usually, when the dishwasher drains loud means that something is clogging the propeller. A small propeller is located under the one-way valve, after the filter. Once you have cleared the propeller, the loud noise while draining should have been fixed.
Dishwasher draining on floor:
Why is your dishwasher draining on the floor? It means that there is leaking on the hose or the pipes. The leaking is usually from where the hose is connected, so this is the part that needs to be fixed. You need to disconnect the area where is leaking, isolated and connect it back. So unless you wanna be running all the time with the mop, you need to sort it.
Dishwasher draining on counter:
When the water from the dishwasher is draining on the counter in the sink, it means that the air gap is clogged. The steam that is supposed to go out is getting liquefied and is causing a leaking at your sink. What you need to do is clean the air gap. In order to do that, you need to remove its cover and clean the hole from whatever is blocking.

Once you remove the filter you will see a small hole. This is where the motor is. Make sure you cut off the power supply before you start anything. You need to take whatever is in there out.
