1. Types of Boiler

There are a number of different types of boilers and each one of them has their own advantage and disadvantage. It is important to understand the working and features of the boiler you have installed in your home to know about its maintenance needs and the problems that could occur to them. Our plumbers and technicians have a lot of experience working with different types of boilers. They can maintain, unclog, repair, replace and install any type of boiler.

1.1. Conventional Boilers

Conventional boilers are the traditional boilers that have a tank and a cylinder, which heating any one of the conventional heating method to heat up water. Conventional boilers produce large quantities of hot water and is very good for large places that need constant supply of hot water at multiple places and have a traditional heating system. Another feature of conventional boiler is that it can be used in combination with another heating source like solar heating, this can help reduce the bills and also the ecological footprint of the boiler. In some buildings the water pressure is low and some of the newer boilers may not be very efficient. A conventional boiler also works for a place with low water pressure and provide a constant supply of hot water.

1.2. Condensing Boiler

A condensing boiler is an upgrade to a conventional gas-fired boiler that uses natural gas as the fuel to burn air in order to produce heat. When the air is burnt, it produces burnt gases (carbon dioxide and other gases) along with water vapors. This is hot burnt air which in case of conventional boiler will leave the boiler system and escape through the vent (flue way). Some of the heat is lost in this process and also transferred to the atmosphere. In condensing boiler this heat is utilized by the boiler system by passing this hot air through a heat exchanger. This air cools down after losing its heat in the heat exchanger and condenses (take the form of a liquid) called condensate. This process recovers some of the heat from the hot air which is used to slightly heat up the water. This helps in reducing the wasted heat and also increases the efficiency of the boiler. A condensing boiler is not only energy efficient but it is an eco-friendly in comparison with conventional boiler as it has less carbon footprint

Along with the condensation unit in the boiler a condensing boiler also requires condensation pipe to drain away the condensate. In some condensing boilers there is an external drain and in others there is an internal drain. This condensate drain pipe could sometime freeze in very cold weather. Our plumber solve the pipe freezing problem by unclogging the pipe and avoiding future freezing by pipe lagging. The condensate is usually acidic and the pipe needs corrosion prevention.

1.3. Combi Boiler

Combi Boiler is one of the most common and cost effective choice for smaller households that require a heating solution as well as hot water on demand. A combi boiler has control over both hot water and central heating which makes it one of the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly boiler. It heats water directly from the main water supply rather than heating and storing a tank of water. It is much easier to install as it is smaller is size and does not need extensive pipe work. However the combi boiler is only a good solution for smaller homes with good water pressure. It will not be able to supply hot water in a lot of plumbing fixtures at the same time. There is a need of constant maintenance of the water supply line if you have a combi boiler installed. Loss of pressure due to leaks, cracks sediment and mineral deposit can dramatically decrease the efficiency of the boiler. Sometimes it is not compatible with showers. It is important to get your water mains pressure tested by our professional plumbers and technicians before getting a combi boiler installed. Our plumbers and services technicians have years of experience dealing with all kinds of issues that occur to combi boiler and the corresponding plumbing.

1.4. System Boiler

A system boiler heats the water directly and also provides hot water to circulate in the central heating system. In a system boiler most of the components required to heat up the water are built in the boiler system. There is only one external part which is hot water tank that stores water. System boiler takes water directly from main water supply rather than heating up the storage water tank itself.

There are a lot of advantages of a system boiler

  • Installation is much easier because most of the parts of the heating and hot water system are already built in the system boiler.
  • It works for multiple plumbing fixtures in contrast with the combi boiler without reduction of pressure.
  • It provide good water pressure in all of the plumbing fixtures (even showers).
  • It is fast and economical water heating and central heating solution.
  • It can also be combined with a number of other heating solution like solar thermal heating.

Unlike combi boiler, a system boiler can take up a lot more space and is more suitable for larger households. The amount of hot water depends on the size of hot water tank and the tank needs to be well insulated to avoid heat loss. I case there is a need to too much hot water the system boiler may not be able to provide instant hot water for a very long time because of the limit of hot water in the tank.

Our plumbers can fix any type of problem and also help you with any type of upgrades with your system boiler

2. Types of Boiler Based on Heat Transfer Method

Heat produced in the boiler has to be transferred to the rooms in order to maintain a comfortable temperature and there are two very common heat transfer methods used in central heating system to heat up the rooms

  1. Steam Boilers
  2. Hot Water Boilers

2.1. Steam Boilers

Steam boiler uses a heat exchange method for heating up the water that circulates in radiators and pipes of the central heating system and supply heat to different places in the home. Steam boilers usually use pressure and gravity to circulate hot steam and also deliver cooled water back to the boiler so that it can be heated again and circulated again. There are two very important features of a steam boilers that are needed to be taken care of from time to time.

  • Water Level: Due to constant heating and turning of water into the steam the quantity of water in the heating system may reduce and from time to time the water level must be checked so that any problem with the system can be avoided. There is usually a manual water cut off value to cut-off the water supply to the boiler.
  • Steam pressure: A lot of steam means a lot of pressure and this pressure needs to be controlled some of the heating systems have a manual pressure release valve for the time when there is too much pressure in the system, some of the pressure can be released

2.2. Hot Water Boiler

In hot water boiler, water is heated and circulated in the heating system throughout the house. Water is heated in a tank and this water is supplied to the radiators in the rooms. Cooled water returns to the boiler for reheating and this process is continued over and over again to maintain the desired temperature. Hot water boiler system uses a number of pumps to circulate water that is heated by the boiler. One of the pump is responsible for pumping cooled water back to the boiler. Hot water heating system rely on water volume, water pressure and water temperature.

Hot water boiler should not be confused with hot water heater, a hot water boiler can also heat up tap water but this water has to be heated in a separate tank rather than rather than the water that circulates in the heating system.

3. Boiler Types Based on Fuel

There are a number of different type of boilers based on the fuel they use to heat up the water. A boiler needs to heat up the water to a certain temperature and there are a number of options available for the fuel that could be burnt in order to heat up the water. People choose these based on availability of the fuel, convenience and need. Our plumbers and technicians have deep understanding of different type of boilers that use different types of fuel.

3.1. Natural Gas Boilers

Natural gas boilers are one of the most common type of boilers used because of the availability of natural gas, also natural gas is less expensive than a number of other fuels used in boilers. One of the major concern with the natural gas boiler(methane) is that it produces a lot of carbon dioxide and sometime even carbon monoxide while burning. These gases are very harmful for nature.

3.2. Electric Boilers

One of the most efficient type of boiler that do not actually burn any fuel and there is not heat loss because of escaping burnt gases into the air. Electric boilers are smaller and compact in size and they are inexpensive as compared to the other boilers. The major cost of electric boiler is the electricity used which make it a lot more expensive as compared to the other boilers that burn inexpensive fuel.

3.3. Oil/Diesel Boiler

Most of the oil and Diesel boiler are the ones that are used in industries because of the high energy density created by burning this liquid fuel.

3.4. Wood/Coal Boiler

Wood and coal boilers are very inexpensive to install and operate because of the cheap fuel but they are very inefficient and produce a lot of waste. In comparison with other types of fuel the energy density of wood and oil is very low.

4. Parts of a Central Heating System

One of the most efficient way of heating your home is by the help of a central heating system. There are a number of thing everyone should know about a central heating system, if they have a central heating system installed in their place or they are getting one installed. A central heating system is composed up of a number of components and each component has its own purpose. Every single component has to work it’s perfectly for the system to work efficiently. Our plumbers and services technicians have a lot of experience working with a number of different types of central heating systems and different types of problem that could occur to its parts. Whether you have boiler clogged or the radiators are not heating up, our plumbers can fix any type of issues reliably and efficiently. Below are some of the main parts of typical central heating system.

4.1. Boiler

The main component of the heating system is the boiler. It burns the fuel to produce heat energy. This heat energy is then transferred to the water which becomes hot water or steam as a medium of heat transfer. Boilers come in a number of different sizes and different boiler have different heating capacity. If you want a heating system to be installed in your home, our technicians will do series of calculations to find a suitable boiler with the heating capacity to heat up your home. A boiler can run into a number of different type of problems. Some of these problems occur because of incorrect installation, other might occur because of lack of maintenance. Our plumbers can fix any type of problem with your boiler.

4.2. Boiler Vent

A boiler vent is usually a part of a boiler that burns fuel in order to heat up the water. It provide a passage for the fresh air to the combustion chamber of the boiler and also an escape route for the burnt gases. In some old models do not even have a boiler or exhaust vent. As the boiler vent is usually located on the outside of the house a number of problems could occur to the boiler vent. It could get clogged because of debris, leaves, branches etc. and the supply of the air to boiler could limited, this reduces the efficiency of the boiler. In some cases the exhaust vent gets clogged causing hindrance in the escape route of the burnt air, this can cause the system to heat up. Our plumbers and technicians are well versed with all the modern methods and techniques to fix all type of problems that usually occur to a boiler and the central heating systems, they not only can unclog the boiler vent but also free you of any type of trouble.

4.3. Type of Fuel

There are a number of different types of fuels used in boiler to produce heat energy.

  • Natural Gas: These type of boilers need a connection with the main gas line and burn methane gas to produce heat.
  • Liquid Petroleum Gas: This type of boiler burn Liquid petroleum gases to produce heat.
  • Wood Burning Boilers: There type of boilers are used where there is no supply of any other type of fuel in abundance. Wood logs, chips and pieces are burnt to produce heat
  • Electric Boilers: These use electricity to heat up the water

Different types of problem occur to different type of boilers, our plumbers have knowledge and understanding of all type of problems that can occur to any type of boiler.

4.4. Radiators

Radiator is the device that is used to heat up the room. Hot water flowing the coil of the radiator and heats up the air. The warm air moves toward the top of the room as the cold one moves down. Cold air heats up again to maintain the desired temperature for the room. There are a number of different types of radiators

  • Steel Radiators
  • Copper Radiators
  • Aluminum Radiators

Sometime the radiator coil and pipe can get clogged because of sediment deposit, debris or a foreign object, this not only reduces the radiator efficiency but also the whole heating system. Radiators may also develop leakages overtime because of a number of reasons. Our plumbers and technicians work with all type of radiators and can fix any type of problem

4.5. Underfloor Heating

Underfloor heating is method in which the whole floor becomes the radiator, a set of coil shaped plastic or copper pipes are installed under the solid concrete or wooden floor. When heated water flow through these coils it heats up the floor which starts to heat the air in the rooms. After some time there is a well maintained temperature of the room. Underfloor heating is a quicker and more efficient way of heating up a room using a central heating system. Our plumbers can also fix any type of issue with the underfloor heating pipes, whether there is a clogged pipe or a leakage.

4.6. Fan Heaters

Fan heaters of a central heating system work similar to the radiators. There is an electric fan heater that blow air past the coiled tubes in which hot water from the boiler is running. This can heat up the room at a much faster rate than a radiator but it also cools the water in the coils much faster. Similar to the radiator and underfloor heater coils, the water coils in the fan heater can get clogged or develop leakages over time. Our plumbers and technicians come with all the tool to fix any type of problem with your heating system.

4.7. Pipes

There is usually a network of pipes in a central heating system. Some of them are responsible for delivering hot water to the radiators, underfloor heating, fan heaters etc. Other are responsible of taking cooled water from the heaters and delivering it to the boiler for reheating. Central heating pipes are usually made up of plastic or copper and they come in a number of different sizes. There are several different type of problems that could occur to the pipe of a central heating system. These pipes have a similar purpose as the normal plumbing pipes i.e. supplying and draining water. Our plumbers and technicians are highly trained to tackle any type of problems with the plumbing pipes of a central heating system, they can fix issues like, clogs, pressure issues, leakages and many more.

4.8. Expansion Vessel

There are some type of central heating system that are vacuum sealed. When pressure starts to build up because of the expansion of water or turning of water into steam, the expansion vessels stabilizes the pressure in pumps, pipes and radiators of the central heating system. If there is no expansion vessel in a vacuum sealed central heating system, the could be a burst of pipe because of too much pressure or overheating.

4.9. Pressure Relief Valve

Usually the central heating system is not vacuum sealed and there is a valve to get rid of extra steam or extra expanded hot water to stabilize the pressure of the heating system. It is important to pay close attention to the pressure especially when there is a requirement of fast and high heat. Some of the models do not have an automatic pressure relief valve and needs to be operated manually. This value can also develop clogs over time and it can be dangerous to use central heating system with a clogged or leaking pressure relief valve. Our plumbers can do the necessary repairs to fix a clogged or leaky pressure relief valve.

4.10. Header Tank

Heat tank is a part of the heating system that is open and not sealed. It is also sometime referred to as ‘feed and expansion tank’. Its job it to maintain the water level of the heating system and in case the system overheats it provide an escape route for the hot water so that the pressure and temperature of the system could be maintained.

4.11. Pump

There can be a number of pumps depending on the type and size of the heating system. Some of the pumps are responsible for pushing the hot water towards the radiators to provide heat to the rooms. Other are responsible for pushing cold water towards the boiler for re-heating purposes. Our plumbers and technicians have good knowledge and understanding of different type of pumps used in a typical central heating system of a home.

4.12. Motorized Valve

This is a part of combination boiler system, in which both tap water and water for the radiators is heated in the same boiler. The motorized valve is attached to the top of the boiler and it decides where the hot waters should be provided. If there is a need of hot water in taps, hot water will flow towards the taps. If the is a needs of hot water in the radiators to heat up the room this valve will supply the hot water to the plumbing of the central heating system.

4.13. Boiler Thermostat

A boiler usually has an electrical or mechanical thermostat that has a minimum and maximum reading. This is used to set the temperature of water inside the boiler. This temperature is not the exact temperature that the room will have while the heating system is on. A higher boiler thermostat means it will take less time for the room to heat up.

4.14. Room Thermostat

Each room usually have its own individual thermostat that senses the temperature of the room and will turn on the heating system if the room’s temperature is needed to be risen. If the temperature of the room rises too much, it will turn of the heating system. After some time with the help of temperature sensor there will be a well maintained room temperature that was desired by the resident. It is important to know that there must not be anything blocking the room thermostat as it needs a free flow of air to determine the exact room temperature. If it is blocked by curtains, furniture or any other objects, it will be very difficult to achieve the desired temperature.

4.15. Thermostatic Radiator Valve

In some modern central heating system, instead of room thermostats there are Thermostatic Radiator Valves which turn on and turn off the flow of hot water in the radiator to achieve a stable temperature rather than turning on and off the heating system. This is a much more efficient way of heating your place

4.16. Other Parts

Depending on the type of boiler there are also a number of other parts of a boiler and a central heating system. No matter the type and size of your boiler and heating system, you can always trust our plumbers and service technician to fix the issues in a short amount of time while providing you a reliable and lasting solution. It also leads to waste of excess fuel which will leave you with a high heating bill. If you feel that your oil boiler takes too much time to heat up your building, our boiler technicians can unclog the nozzle or fix any other issues with your boiler that is reducing the efficiency of the boiler.

5.3 Boiler Clogged with Soot

Gas fired boiler and oil furnaces sometimes face a problem which is soot. Soot is think black semi burnt carbon particle that usually stick to the bottom of the boiler. When there is too much soot it form a barrier and causes heat to go up the flue way or chimney rather than heating water. Our services technician usually perform one of the following to fix the soot problem.

  • Cleaning and servicing
  • Replacement of the heat exchanger
  • Burner adjustment
  • Regular maintenance

If the boiler is not regularly cleaned and maintained, soot reappear after sometime.

5.4. Boiler Coil Clogged

In some tankless water heaters and boilers there is a coil in which water passes and heats up, the coil acts as the heat exchange medium to transfer heat to water. When the water heats up the mineral and salt of hard water become insoluble and deposit on the walls of the coil. If the water is not filtered properly, sediments might also be making their way into the boiler coil. This hinder the flow of water and hot water pressure reduces. Our plumbers and technicians can unclog the coil, add filter and water softeners to reduce the risk of coil getting clogged again.

5.5. Boiler Heat Exchanger Clogged

The boiler heat exchanger could also get clogged with sediment or mineral deposits and is needed to be backflushed or replaced. Our plumbers usually test the heat exchanger and then provide a fix to restore the boiler to its full efficiency.

5.6. Boiler Vent Clogged

Boiler vent (flueway) is the way for burnt gases to escape and provide fresh air to the boiler. It could get clogged overtime because of dust, debris, leaves, branches or any foreign objects. A clogged flue way might limit the availability for fresh air to the boiler and hence reduce its efficiency. Our plumbers use the best tools to unclog the flue ways and also advise on getting an air mesh filter installed on the flueway to avoid debris from falling into the boiler vent.

5.7. Clogged Boiler Pipes

There are a number of pipes connected to a boiler, some of them take hot water from the boiler and other deliver cold water to it. Usually there is a network of pipes surrounding a boiler and a clog in any of the pipe will reduce the system efficiency and cause the system to overheat. Our plumbers and technicians can fix any type of clog in any type of boiler pipes.

6. Most Common Problems that can Occur to a Boiler

It is important to know the cause of these problems and what to do when these problems occur. At first it is important to know what type of boiler you have, whether it is a steam boiler or a hot water boiler.

6.1 Pressure Loss

One of the most common problem that could occur to a boiler is the loss of pressure. There could be a leak at somewhere in the system that is letting out water or steam and causing the loss of pressure. In some cases a faulty pressure relief valves lets our water and steam causes the loss of pressure in the system. This could make the system very inefficient.

6.2. Problem with the Thermostat

A faulty thermostat needs to be replaced as soon as possible. It can make the system inefficient and also make the desired temperature very hard to reach.

6.3. Kettling

As the boiler age it could develop a problem known as kettling, boiler starts to make strange noises when it is on. Overtime in the heat exchanger where water is heated over and over again, The calcium salts from the hard water become insoluble at high temperature and start to deposit on the bottom of the tank or container in which water is being heated. These salt deposits hinder the flow of water in the heat exchanger, water becomes too hot and it starts steaming. As the water expands it also makes the tank to expand with it. The noise that comes from the boiler is either the water tank or heat exchanger expanding.

We have expert plumbers and technicians who have deep understanding of the kettling problem and how to deal with it. In some cases kettering may occur because of inappropriate installation or just the radiator overheating. It is important to get the boiler checked before attempting a DIY method. Our plumbers do a number of thing to fix the kettling depending on the condition of the boiler. Here are some of the cures of kettling

  • Replacing the heat exchanger with a new one
  • Power flushing the system which will get rid of all the sediment and salt buildup in the system
  • Using a water softener or adding a liquid inhibitor to the system
  • Using a magnetic inhibitor

6.4. Radiator Problems

There can be a number of problems that could occur to a radiator, due to sediment buildup in the radiator coil pipe there could be slow water pressure and slower heating. Over time radiators can also leak and cause the water level and pressure to drop.

Our plumbers can fix any type of problem with a radiator. By carefully inspecting and testing the radiator they can provide you with a number of option to get your heating system back on track.

7. Causes of Boiler Pipe clogs

There is a whole plumbing system that supplies hot water to the radiators and take cold water from the radiators and delivers it the boiler. A clog can happen to any pipe but there are some common causes of a clogged pipe in a heating system. It is important to consult with a heating system expert to fix a clogged pipe issues with your heating system. We have a number of heating system expert who can fix the clogged boiler pipe problem and also provide you a permanent solution so that this problem never happens again.

7.1. Hard Water

Hard water is one of the very common reason of blockages that develop in boiler pipes. High amount of minerals and salt content in the water when makes it way into the boiler, it starts making problems like kettling, overheating and eventually start developing blockages in the pipes. Hard water is a problem for the whole heating system not only the pipes. The minerals start to deposit on the wall of the pipes and by the passage of time this mineral deposit become thick enough to clog the pipes. Our plumbers and technicians usually flush out the whole central heating system to get rid of the mineral deposits and also add water softeners so that this problems do not occur over and over again.

7.2. Rust

This problem usually occurs to older heating system. Nowadays pipes of the central heating system are designed to fight rust. If there is too much oxygen in the system, in presence of moisture, the pipe will start to rust. If this problems occurs, our plumbers will first inspect the system to find out the cause and exact location of the problem, after that necessary repairs are made to fix the issue. When the real cause of the rust is found our plumbers give necessary advices and guidelines so that this problem never happens again.
7.3. Sediment Buildup

There could be two cause of the sediment buildup in the pipe,

  • The water supply has a lot of sediment or the sediment filter is broken
  • There is a underground water supply line that has developed leakages and cracks and has allowed the underground sediment to make its way into the water

This dirt and debris not only gets deposited in pipes and cause clogs but when it makes its way into the boiler or water take it can easily lead to overheating. Using a sediment filter near the water supply for the boiler and getting the underground leakages and cracks can fix this issues.
